Why I Love Pineapple

PineappleYesterday, I talked about the health benefits of chia. Today, the awesome food of the day is pineapple. After you read this post, you will want to run right to the store and buy one.

One cup of pineapple has 105% of the Daily Recommended Value (DRV) of Vitamin C and 76.5% of the DRV of manganese. Vitamin C and manganese are antioxidants that help your body defend against free radicals. Free radicals cause cell damage and lead to most major illnesses and diseases from the common cold to heart disease and cancer.

Breastfeeding women who have struggled with low supply report that drinking multiple cups of pineapple juice and eating pineapple results in increased production in 2-3 days.

Bromelain

You know from my previous post Affordable Healthy Shopping 101 – Online Shopping that I love my bromelain supplement. It continues to help me when I get neck strain from blogging too much. The pain is gone in a day or two as opposed to weeks as in some of my pre-bromelain aggravations.

Additional uses for bromelain:

  • Prescribed post-surgery to reduce inflammation. It is also used to treat sinusitis, digestive disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, bruises, and swelling.
  • Proven to prevent and shrink tumors in mice and ease some of the side effects of chemotherapy.

The highest concentration of bromelain is in the stem of the pineapple, so to truly fight inflammation, it is best to take a supplement. Because bromelain prevents clotting, supplements are not recommended for those who already take a blood thinner. Take on an empty stomach if using as an anti-inflammatory and with food as a digestive aid. Buy at Vitacost through this link and receive $10 off your first order!

Pineapple packs a real punch. But possibly best of all, it tastes great! If you are trying to wean yourself off of refined sugars, keep some pineapple in the fridge. It is so sweet, you won’t miss the cookie. Buy a whole pineapple and cut it yourself to save a ton of money. Pre-cut pineapple runs about $3.99 per pound or two servings. I can buy a whole pineapple for $2.99 or $2.49 on sale. The one I bought yesterday yielded approximately 2 1/2 pounds or 5 servings.

Don’t be intimidated about cutting a pineapple. It’s not as hard as it looks. If you’re a gadget person, you can purchase a pineapple corer.

Pineapple just might be the answer to all of your problems!
