Functional medicine, in a nutshell, is medicine the way it’s supposed to be. If you’re reading this, you’re probably here because you want a doctor who will listen to you. Who won’t just treat your symptoms. Who won’t just send you home with a pill. Who won’t say it’s “in your head” if he/she “can’t find anything wrong with you.”
That’s all we want, right?
To be heard! To be treated like an individual, not a textbook diagnosis! To FINALLY get to the bottom of what’s ailing us!
That kind of practitioner exists and they are practicing functional medicine. According to the Institute for Fuctional Medicine (IFM) a functional medicine practitioner:
- Takes time with each patient, listening to medical history, family history, lifestyle choices, and environmental factors.
- Examines genetics, environment, and lifestyle to analyze disease progression.
- Proactive, predictive, personalized treatment.
- Empowers patients to participate in their own health.
This is the kind of doctor we wish we would see every time something ails us. Guess what? You can! IFM has a database of their members on their site which means you can search for a functional medical practitioner near you.
I must admit, I have been familiar with integrative practitioners for a long time but have only recently become aware of the term functional medicine. The two terms are similar but not interchangeable. To many, the differences are negligible. Both take a patient-centered approach that focuses on whole person – medical history, lifestyle, and environmental factors. However, while integrative medicine uses both conventional therapies and alternative remedies to cure an ailment, functional medicine addresses the root cause of the disease, not the disease itself.
Only you can determine what method of treatment is right for you – conventional, integrative, or functional. But, I know that when I go to a doctor and ask them why I have a certain issue, I want them to fix the reason why it’s happening, not just mask the symptoms.
